Description

Theatre teachers educate and train students in the interpretative arts. They can work with individuals or with groups of all ages. Teachers can work in professional or amateur theatre companies, in continuing education universities or centres, in community centres, etc. They can train future actors/actresses or teach acting techniques as a form of recreation or therapy. Theatre teachers can also be the artistic directors of a company.

Tasks

  • Plan the programme to teach.
  • Design exercises to improve interpretative techniques.
  • Select the theatrical pieces to be rehearsed.
  • Assess and register the level and development of students.
  • Advice in selections at auditions and castings.
  • Complete specific training courses or workshops.
  • If working at a community centre or with an amateur theatre group, will also be responsible for staging and directing the work.
  • If working at a professional company, will be responsible for training students in the specific skills required for the selected staging.
  • Give private lessons to the actors/actresses preparing for a casting.
