Educator with music

Description

Music therapists design, develop and implement therapeutic interventions for curative purposes based on the potentials of music as a work method and tool. They aim to improve the physical, psychological sensory and social recovery processes of individuals or groups, whether as specific activities or as complementary activities, as a part of an overall care programme.

Tasks

  • Perform work as part of a medical or welfare team, or may provide services independently, to aid with problems or conditions (which may be social, sensory, psychological or physical) related to the communication processes of individuals or groups, utilising music-based therapies.
  • Take the medical history of patients, with the execution or interpretation of a vital, psychological or sonor-musical diagnosis, made based on the systematic collection of data.
  • Design individually, or with other professionals, a personalised treatment and therapy for the patient's or group's diagnosed problems or condition in an attempt to improve communicative, relational, emotional and affective processes, using components of non-verbal language, based on music as a work method and tool.
  • Develop psychological, teaching and musical materials and resources to conduct the therapy designed based on the preliminary diagnosis and according to the problem to be addressed (improvement in self-esteem, emotional areas, control, psychomotor skills, coordination of psychomotor movements, relaxation, muscle tone, space-time orientation, learning through reading writing, etc.)
  • Design activities and exercises according to the music therapy method and verify them, if necessary, with other professionals that aid in the care of individuals or groups.
  • Select musical pieces (live music, songs, melodies, etc.), sounds, noises and musical instruments in accordance with the therapy designed and the needs of individuals or groups to work on problems or conditions using musical elements (rhythm, sound, harmony, melody, etc.).
  • Conduct and monitor music therapy sessions for individuals or groups to improve communication, relational, emotional and affective processes using components of non-verbal language.
  • Prepare follow-up reports on the progress of individuals or groups, within a workplace, and inform patients about improvements in order to determine the continuity of therapy.
