Description

Dance teachers train and teach their students in all types of dance. They may work individually or with groups of all ages. Teachers can work in private dance schools, at universities or at adult continuing education centres, at leisure centres, etc. They may teach future artists in this field, teach people to be dance teachers (both specialised or more generic), or teach dance for recreation. In general, dance teachers specialise in a specific type of dance. They also must be able to create choreographies for their students and they often need to have training in anatomy and physiology, since they must prepare their students physical condition. They may also need to have studied the history of dance.

Tasks

  • Teach dance to future professionals or community dances, for the entertainment and leisure sector.
  • Train future dance teachers.
  • Plan the training programme to be given.
  • Select music and routines for rehearsals.
  • Prepare warm-up exercises prior to starting to dance (to stretch the muscles and limbs) and teach students about human anatomy, to prevent injuries.
  • Assess and register the level and development of students.
  • Advise (in selections) at auditions and castings.
  • Attend dance classes, in order to improve and maintain their abilities.
  • Do sport, given the importance of the physical aspect of their profession.
  • Complete specific training courses or workshops.
  • Collaborate in the area of music (music videos, concerts), publicity (photography, television, Internet), participate in designing digital products and corporate events.
  • May work as choreographer at times in group activities.
