In addition, the Department of Education requires candidates for a vacancy or supply post to pass an examination that certifies their proficiency to teach specified visual arts and design credits on vocational training courses.
The examination is generally held twice a year, usually in the first and third terms of the school year. It is both theoretical and practical and is divided into two parts. The first is an examination about conceptual and procedural content and the second is a practical exercise in teaching and classroom management tasks and processes.
People who have six months' experience in teaching jobs in the same speciality in state schools reporting to the Department of Education are exempt from this examination.
They should also recycle their artistic knowledge by doing specialised courses in the art subject they teach: for example, pottery, conservation and restoration of archaeological, pictorial or sculptural objects, technical, colour and art drawing, interior design, product design, media, etc.
In addition to speaking and writing Catalan and Spanish correctly, it is also recommended that their English is good enough to understand documents written in the language.
