Working for non-profit organisations, volunteer programme managers plan, manage and lead the participation of volunteers in the running of activities and services offered to help the organisation fulfil its social mission statement. It is worth noting that there is a very wide range of organisations within the tertiary sector (associations, foundations, international cooperation NGOs), for which reason the tasks performed by this professional may vary accordingly.


  • Contribute to the organisation's strategic planning on volunteer work-related issues.
    Understand the organisation's mission and oversee its short and medium-term targets, as well as the activities run.
    Define the remit of volunteers within the organisation's services and activities, on the basis of its mission, the nature of the sector in which it wishes to operate, competitors and their target market, and sources of competitive advantage over competitors.
  • Help the external communication and marketing teams to clearly publicise the organisation's mission amongst its target market, as well as the specific programmes it offers and needs for people interested in volunteering.
  • Manage the human resources, combining the work of paid professionals and volunteers.
    Efficiently organise, draw together and coordinate the various units (teams and equipment).
    Motivate volunteers and paid professionals and promote the expansion of the team.
    Coordinate and oversee the work of the different types of staff at the organisation.
    Identify the work needs, establish and coordinate the different duties.
    Recruit internal and external staff. Ensure that staff adapt to the organisational culture.
    Develop the training and qualification of the organisation's volunteers.
  • Foster participation within the organisation.
    Promote internal communication.
    Promote volunteer participation in the organisation's activities and in the participatory and decision-making processes that affect them (for example, whether or not they are made members of the entity).
