Artistic therapist

Description

Art therapists are professionals who specialise in art and psychotherapy, or any variety of psychological approach that can be applied to art therapy. Art therapists use art therapy to treat patients or groups. They use artistic exercises of a psychological and creative nature (for example, the creation of artistic images and objects) to diagnose and treat emotional problems and those related to self-image and personal growth. Artistic therapy can be provided through private practice or as part of institutions, as well as alongside a therapeutic team normally made up of psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, therapists and social workers.

Tasks

  • Discuss the patient's needs and desired progress with the other members of the medical team.
  • Design and coordinate therapeutic activities of an artistic nature for patients or groups, depending on their problems, characteristics, needs or specific goals.
  • Recognise, identify and assess the therapeutic approaches at work in the different practices and treatment options.
  • Stimulate the patient to make him or her react, or relieve his or her problems through the chosen therapy.
  • Make use of artistic media to help the patient receiving the treatment express and convey his or her feelings, thereby improving their emotional well-being.
