Instructor of children's and young people leisure time educational activities

These professionals lead leisure and socio-educational activities. These can be carried out in the field of recreational activities (recreation centres, camping trips, summer camps, etc), as services that complement school activities (playground, dining room, extra-curricular activities, etc.) or at open centres and other free-time education facilities for children.

Their most important function is to educate and instil values in children and young people, accompanying and guiding them during the performance of different activities. For example, if they work as an instructor in a school cafeteria, they will educate children and young people in eating habits and autonomy and if they carry out leisure activities, they will promote participation and respect through team games.

• Analyse the needs and characteristics of the group of children and young people of which they are the instructor.
• Design the activities, with the respective objectives, content and methods.
• Coordinate the activities with the rest of the actions of the respective entity.
• Prepare or gather the materials necessary for the carrying out of the activity.
• Assess the results of the activity that has been carried out, through the application of the appropriate assessment techniques and procedures.
• Establish regular contact with the fathers, mothers or guardians of the children and young people in their group.

• Boost the activities and ensure their development, making sure that the participants follow them properly.
• Educate on social and relationship values through leisure.
• Encourage the union, understanding and communication of the group, managing conflicts that may arise in a pedagogical way.
• Coordinate with the team of instructors.

• Watch over the children during meals, while carrying out educational activities related to social and eating habits.
• Supervise the personal hygiene of the children and young people.
• Prepare and carry out recreational and educational tasks during mid-day playtime.
• Accompany the children and young people during their school bus route, which takes them from the point of origin to the school or children's centre and vice versa.
• Once the activity is over, ensure that the children are accompanied by the person designated to take care of them, unless it is not necessarily due to their age and with the express authorisation of the father, mother or guardian.

Complementary training

It is advisable to have the title of instructor or director of education activities in leisure, since it is an essential requirement in many job offers. Despite this, the sector has pending the creation of an Official Registry of Professionals in Leisure Education in Catalonia and until it becomes effective, the degrees that these professionals need to be leisure instructors are those mentioned above, as stipulated in Decree 267/2016.

Also, it is convenient to have courses related to child and young people education, such as the following:
Dynamization of children's leisure time educational activities.
Conflict Management Course.

Other specific skills

Knowledge on teaching resources, revitalization techniques, playgrounds and leisure activities (theatre, storytelling, puppets, etc.) is required.

It is also essential to speak and write Catalan and Spanish properly, not only to communicate with the students, but also to support in the preparation of reports related to the programming of leisure activities, project evaluation, communication with families, etc.

Social community worker

Individuals related to the social/community field have an interest in working to improve people's social well-being and quality of life, as well as enhance their integration into their social, family and/or work environment. The professional activities that are common in this field include providing special support and aid to people at risk of social exclusion, designing programmes and implementing resources for the social and cultural stimulation of an area, and acting as mediators for conflict resolution in family, social or interpersonal environments. These activities involve constant interaction with people in order to improve their psychological and social well-being.

• Work hours

  The normal working day is part-time, coinciding with the extra-curricular schedule. There is also work over the weekend and during holiday periods.
  
  Most companies often offer temporary contracts. In the case of working in schools, the most frequent contracts are permanent seasonal and temporary (from September to June).
  

• Salary

  The compensation is calculated according to the experience, hours of work and the tasks performed. Usually, it ranges between 13,300 and 18,000 euros gross per year.
