Specialist in education for people with sensory (visual and hearing) impairments.

Description

Teachers for the sensory impaired perform actions aiming to further the development of educational and socio-educational processes for people who suffer from sensory (visual and hearing) impairments, in order to foster their independence and help them be integrated into society in the same conditions as other people.

Tasks

  • Using an interdisciplinary approach, identify and assess the educational needs of students with hearing and sight impairments.
  • Optimise communication with these students by teaching with and using a suitable language for the type of sensory impairment from which they suffer (sign language, Braille, lipreading).
  • Provide students with visual or hearing impairments whatever personalised educational options they need throughout their time at the school and any necessary teaching support.
  • Promote and help to draw up adapted versions of additions to school curricula, in order to address the specific needs of students with sight or hearing impairments, and create suitable teaching resources for each case.
  • Assess and keep track of progress made by students with hearing or sight impairments.
  • Periodically assess, control and monitor the development of students' hearing or sight impairments.
  • Help to provide these students with guidance on their educational path in its different stages and subsequently on socio-professional integration processes.
  • Advise teachers and specialists involved in teaching activities, materials and resources, train them and help to keep them updated, and liaise with other professionals who interact with the students (speech therapists, audioprosthologists, etc.).
  • Guide the families of students with hearing and sight impairments, in order to improve their understanding of these disabilities and the needs they produce, thereby allowing them to participate more actively in their children's education.
