Description

The import or export of goods is subject to administrative regulations that involve several procedures before the Customs Authorities. This makes it necessary to have a a professional that assumes responsibility for these processes. The customs dispatcher usually provides their services within the framework of forwarding and customs agents; they represent the customer before the Customs Authorities and take care of all the paperwork and procedures for the customs clearance of goods being imported, exported or in transit. Shipping agents operate as independent intermediaries acting for and on behalf of ship-owners or operators and take care of all administrative procedures in the port associated with freight transport. Whether delivery and loading or arrival and unloading of goods, shipping agents are responsible for all the administrative procedures associated with the goods. In addition, the same shipping agents may represent several shipping companies. Furthermore, a shipping agent is a company that provides services for international goods transport, is an intermediary between importers or exporters and international transport companies (using any means sea, air or land).

Tasks

  • Receive the information and necessary instructions from the customer (to whose account the merchandise is being processed) for moving the goods through customs.
  • Present the Customs documents required for shipping the merchandise:
    • Classify the merchandise being imported or exported according to its customs tariffs.
    • Draft the SAD (Single Administrative Document) and provides the copy endorsed by Customs to the Shipping Agent or transport company so that the merchandise may leave the bonded warehouse and be shipped to its destination.
    • Use EDI (Electronic Interchange of Data) to present the documentation and procedures to the Customs Authorities.
    • Sign official records.
    • Where applicable, ensure customs regulations and other provisions are applied to the goods being processed.
  • Perform, where applicable, the administrative steps required for:
    • Physical inspections of Customs.
    • Attend to Customs requirements for shipment of goods.
    • Be present during physical inspections.
  • Make payment, in the name of the owner of the merchandise, of the corresponding tariffs and charges, VAT and other expenses. Settle consignee expenses to be able to remove goods from the bonded warehouse.
