This professional works on the treatment and hygiene of the hair and scalp. The hairdresser masters all hairdressing specialities carried out in a salon: cutting, styling, perming, bleaching, dyeing and hairpieces. He/she can also perform complementary techniques in social make-up, manicure, pedicure and barbering.

He/she can also work as a mobile hairdresser, carrying out home services for people with reduced mobility or individuals who do not have the time to go to hairdressing salons within conventional opening hours, or who need special services for specific events, for example weddings.

• Customer service and management of the establishment:
  - Probes the preferences of the clientele and advises on the hairstyles that best suit the person, according to their image and personality.
  - Occasionally, she prescribes the purchase of products suited to the needs of the client.
  - At the end of the service, charges the client for the work carried out.
  - Controls the stock of cosmetic products and consumables, and the furniture and machinery, placing the relevant orders to replenish or renew them when appropriate.
  - Implements the necessary measures to comply with safety and hygiene standards in the establishment, ensuring the cleanliness, control and sterilisation of work equipment.
  - When working as a mobile hairdresser, this professional moves and prepares the space where the service is to be carried out, conditioning the environment and preparing the necessary utensils and products for each job in order to guarantee hygienic-sanitary conditions.
• Carries out hairdressing techniques:
  - Applies hair washing and hygiene techniques according to needs. Analyses hair and scalp to detect alterations in order to apply the appropriate aesthetic treatments: different types of creams, shampoos and other products for the hair.
  - Changes all or part of the hair colour, dyeing it with or without bleaching. Mixes chemical products to achieve the desired result and applies these products correctly, depending on whether they are dyes, highlights, baths, etc.
  - Carves the hair according to the selected style and with the most appropriate technique for each case. In the case of men, he also trims and shaves the beard and moustache.
  - Temporarily or permanently changes the shape of the hair, combing and styling it according to the desired style, according to fashion patterns and in accordance with hair types, both in length and shape.
  - Places hair prostheses, intervening in the design and prior diagnosis according to the client's demand and the typology of the hair in terms of shape and colour.
  - Sometimes applies complementary services to hairdressing, such as manicure and pedicure, social make-up and depilation.
  - If he/she is an advanced professional, he/she teaches apprentices and assistants or instructs other experienced professionals to do so.

• Work hours

  The usual working day is morning and afternoon, with a Split Schedule, or rotating shifts (depending on the size of the salon), but it is also possible that the salon does not close at midday. Work is carried out on Saturdays, as this is the busiest day of the week.
  
  In home services, a certain flexibility of hours is desirable, with availability to work weekends and holidays if necessary.

• Salary

  Remuneration may vary according to the experience and background of the professional. It is common for the worker to receive commission for services performed or products sold.
  
  According to the current collective agreement, the salary range is between €950 and €1,545.
  
  If home services are provided, it should be borne in mind that these are charged approximately 50% more than those offered to salons, and even more so on public holidays. In these cases, the total remuneration will depend on the rates established, which may vary depending on the situation and the dedication of the professional.

  As regards material resources, it is necessary to fit out commercial premises and adjust these to the requirements of the activity : with a window display, waiting area, cloakroom, shampooing section, technical operations area (tints, perms,etc.), artistic operations area (cutting and styling), bathroom and storeroom.

  Other material resources will also be necessary to carry out the daily work: furniture, work tools and equipment (such as scissors, combs, towels, brushes, etc.), diferent devices, clothing for the workers and products of common use (shampoos, dyes, hairsprays, etc.).
