• Welcome and assist customers, lending advice regarding the insertion of the piercing, possible locations, types of jewels, etc. Must inform customers of the risks involved: allergies, scarring problems, etc., and the aseptic measures to be applied in order to prevent these.
• Once all aspects of the technique have been discussed, prepare and sterilise all the materials and instruments to be used, including the appropriately selected jewel.
• Observe the anatomy of the client, select a safe location on the body and proceed to cleaning and disinfecting the area.
• To prevent pain, either anaesthetise or freeze the area to be pierced.
• Mark the points of entry and exit of the needle. Holding the skin in place with clamps, proceed to piercing and insert the jewel. If necessary, cover and treat the pierced area.
• Carry out the treatment and follow-up work.
• Provide hygienic maintenance guidelines.
• Dispose of used disposable materials according to health and safety regulations.
• The body piercer tends to be the one in charge of the establishment. He/she is in charge of sales, ordering supplies, etc.

In some cases, these establishments also operate as body piercing and tattoo sales points. It is therefore necessary to have access to premises which meet all of the health and safety standards required by law. Body piercers also need a range of instruments and basic equipment in order to carry out their occupation: a table, piercing jewellery display, approved needles, sterilising equipment, etc.
