Technician in Speech Therapy

Description

The speech therapist carries out activities aimed at preventing speech and communication disorders linked to the voice, to speaking, hearing and swallowing, at their identification and treatment in the community as a whole and especially in the case of people with communication-related disabilities (hard of hearing). Speech therapists exercise their occupation in schools, hospitals, healthcare associations or medical centres.

Tasks

  • Work with schools, studying the situation of the group of students with regard to speech disorders.
    Carry out studies using various methodological instruments to identify the incidence of the disorders.
    Discuss the results with the company in order to be able to establish a general action plan.
    Check activity schedules and programmes to implement own programmes.
  • Choose which students to involve in the treatment.
    Analyse each case individually.
    Hold meetings with the teaching staff to establish the educational status of the child.
    Speak with his/her parents in order to inform them of the suitability of the treatment.
  • Establish the optimal action program for each child.
    Identify the needs of the child.
    Get pedagogic advice to ensure that the treatment is implemented in the most efficient manner possible.
    Implement the programme.
    Carry out regular checks to establish the child's progress.
    Draw up follow-up reports.
  • Meet with the parents on a regular basis to keep them informed of their child's progress.
  • Intervene in the healthcare sector, both on a hospital level and in the community.
    Carry out a diagnosis for patients referred by the laryngectomy, aphasia, dysarthria or maxillofacial surgery departments.
    Discuss each case with the specialists who referred it.
    Establish a course of treatment together with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Implement an action programme for each patient.
    Use the resources new technologies bring (sound recording software programmes) to help teach phonetics.
    Assess the progress of each patient.
    Share the result with specialists.
  • Give advice to associations devoted to groups presenting a particular communication disorder (the hearing impaired).
    Study the implementation of alternative means of communication using new technologies (SAAC).
