Description

The e-Health specialist is a professional with high technical qualifications in digital technologies, IT and telecommunications capable of developing equipment, widgets and digital systems that should enable the development of new medical technologies and services to be applied to health practice. Consequently, this professional usually works in companies supplying technology (hardware and software), equipment, widgets and health-related services.

E-Health, which is characterised by the automation of medical management support processes and non-presence between the patient and the health professional, is an emerging field where medical informatics, the desire to improve public health, the provision of medical services more efficiently and developments in information and communication technologies through the internet and developments in digital technologies that are connected, such as the possibility of storing and managing data in the cloud, apps or chatbots, all come together.

This discipline is therefore defined as the application of these technologies in the field of health and has its origins in the desire to improve the monitoring of patients' health. The need to automate these procedures responds firstly to the same complexity in the management of files and medical records and secondly to the possibilities of information and communication technologies. This has led to the development and adoption of electronic systems for the management and monitoring of patient records, incorporating interaction with the person requiring treatment.

In short, e-Health systems allow healthcare professionals to focus most of their attention on the patient, records are automated, waiting times are reduced and therefore patients see their waiting time reduced and administrative barriers to prescribing medicines are removed. E-Health therefore introduces new ways of delivering healthcare services that facilitate collaboration between different healthcare institutions and enable the sharing of crucial information, allowing new ways of interacting with patients.

Tasks

  • Develop widgets and equipment resulting from the convergence of medical devices with connectivity and consumer technology, using practical approaches that balance benefits and risks, in the following fields of e-Health: software, artificial intelligence and machine learning in software as a medical device; cybersecurity, device software functions (including mobile medical apps), data systems and interoperability of medical devices, online medical devices to facilitate videoconferencing, remote monitoring of patients or mobile health, etc.
  • Analyse the objectives of an e-Health project, studying the technological needs, the health service delivery environment in which the project is inserted and assess the financial costs of the project. Provide the technological solution in the form of widgets, equipment and software and propose and argue for solutions, defining the organisational and technological changes and the necessary investments.
  • Install or direct the installations of the different software and hardware systems and the necessary complementary equipment and communication networks that allow the interconnection of health centres, socio-health centres or family homes with health professionals to access medical consultations.
  • Propose e-Health plans and systems to improve healthcare provision, facilitate access for all citizens, streamline the work of health professionals, favour continuity of care between the different levels of care, optimise administrative procedures and improve the efficiency of the system. Evaluate and argue the benefits of the project, based on feasibility studies and cost-benefit assessment.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of equipment and adaptation to changes that may occur in the organisation or in new medical knowledge and techniques.
  • Responsible for the training of health professionals who will use the e-Health systems in place and develop procedural protocols.
  • Provide medical staff who must make a decision with digital tools and a holistic view of the patient's health through access to data and give them greater control over their health. The systems implemented empower people receiving treatment to make better informed decisions about their own health (prevention, early diagnosis of diseases, management of chronic conditions outside traditional healthcare settings).
