Specialist in industrial biomaterials
Description
Industrial or white biotechnology is that applied to industrial processes. Its main purpose is to create easily degradable products that consume less energy and generate less waste during production One of the most recent applications are biomaterials, productsd synthesised from natural materials or using methods based on biological systems and which can replace, for example, plastics and other petroleum derivatives. The most highly developed Biomaterials are polymers produced from microorganisms, plants or derivatives, and used as an alternative to plastics. Bioplastics are completely biodegradable and have multiple industrial applications. There are other biomaterials, such as textile fibers obtained from spider webs and transgenic silkworms. The specialist in biomaterials concentrates on the search for new biomaterials that are alternatives to petroleum derivatives, and develops and improves existing products to generalize their use.
Tasks
- Research the obtainment of new biomaterials from bioprocesses.
- Develop new biomaterials. Work on the improvement and potential new applications of existing materials.
- Develop procedures for the industrial production and combination of biomaterials.
- Provide information on the characteristics, properties and capabilities of biomaterials.
- Identify and recommend appropriate biomaterials according to uses and applications.
- Be aware of new biomaterials developed.
- Publish research results in specialised journals and/or scientific congresses.
- Form part of a multidisciplinary team: Work and coordinate with biologists, biochemists, chemists, biotechnologists and industrial engineers.
