Description

They are not only a restorer, but also a technician with in-depth knowledge of the different types of sound recordings made during the time they have learned the possibilities currently offered by digital engineering. Their work, through the restoration of sound materials, makes it possible to hear recordings that were considered lost, ensuring faithfulness to the original acoustics and improving the sound quality. Their work ensures the preservation of musical heritage on a variety of supports, such as the compact disc, which is highly durable, small in size and has many uses.

Tasks

  • Prepares reports prior to the project which contain an initial assessment of the restoration to be carried out and its financial cost.
  • If necessary, carries out tasks to clean the audio documents.
    Combine traditional cleaning methods -applying fluids, suitable substances and techniques to every material- with the use of the specific machinery existing on the market to eliminate waste, contaminants and marks from touching it.
  • Carry out documentation works prior to the intervention that will be useful for defining digitisation criteria.
    Research to determine the time for recording and editing, the place where it was done and the equipment and technique used to make the sound recording. With this, try to assure that the reproduction of the document, once restored, is as similar as possible to the original recording.
  • Select the suitable technology to reproduce the original document with optimum quality that is faithful to its original acoustic version.
    Depending on the support, select the electronic cylinder recorder, the type of needle and appropriate capsule, etc.
    Supervise the equalisation process.
  • Be informed about existing software programs for performing the digitisation process.
    Apply the technology to eliminate clicks, scratches and hisses caused both by the wear of the support and environmental conditions where the recording was done.
    Control digital editing processes for the sound documents and their later storage.
  • In charge of the digital processing and storage of graphic contents via the use of a scanner and graphic editing programs.
    Run the process to digitise the scores, decorative elements, iconographies, author's trademarks and any other attribute that makes a musical instrument unique.
    Meets with specialists in the restoration of paper, wood, metal or any other medium, in cases where the handling of the object requires specialised attention.
